I am very pleased to announce that Edward is no longer a strange shade of dirty yellow and has instead developed a fairly pale skin tone.
His jaundice has lasted roughly four weeks, having started within a day or so of him being born. He can thank it for an extended initial stay in hospital, complete with some time under …
As one would expect, shortly after Liz discovered she was pregnant, a (community) midwife was assigned to her. During the following eight(-ish) months Liz saw him (yes, not what I was expecting either) twice(!) and one of those was at the hospital after they had incorrectly told the community midwives we had already been discharged!
That's the very firm message that is presented from all directions. Even the formula manufacturers print it on all their packaging. Reports I've seen about and comparing formula foods all start with half a page telling you how none of them are as good as real breast milk! The hospital has counsellors on hand to help you with breast feeding …
... in the eyes of the country is remarkably simple and without paperwork!
Liz phoned up a few days ago and booked an appointment with the registrar (she did at this point provide her name, the closest thing to authentication in the entire process).
Yesterday all three of us went into Reigate, found the library and kept that appointment. Upon …
On Wednesday 3rd January, the morning after Edward was born, a paediatrician visited to give him an initial check up. One of the things she spotted was that he had quite severe tongue tie. This condition can affect a baby's ability to feed (especially breast feed) and later possibly affect speech. Further more, it almost always affects males and …
Liz and Edward finally returned from the hospital yesterday evening. While Edward is still a little jaundice, both are generally doing OK.
Their stay in hospital was a little longer than expected due to some bad advice, Edward being jaundice and a small dose of photo-therapy being required:
Apparently this is quite common, but we still found it to be …
Liz and I are very proud to announce that on the 2nd of January we had a lovely baby boy. He was 8lb 2oz and delivered after a 6 hour labour, which Liz did without any pain relief (she's especially proud of that bit!). :-)
Lots more details and some photos will follow at some point soon I hope!
Last week I officially (and finally, having stayed on from my initial leaving date in August) parted from Digitalbrain, where I have been working for over five years.
I decided to leave partly due to having been there five years and it being time for a change and partly due to the fact that my life is changing, with …
I'm quite used to getting a Christmas tree out of box, unfolding the branches, positioning it in a relatively small, convenient location and adding decorations.
This year however I haven't been permitted such simplicity. Instead I've been "treated" to the joys of real Christmas tree. Lessons I have learnt:-
Today, while on the way to return some curtains (a very exciting weekend!) we noticed a garden centre advertising an ice rink. Imagining something like the Somerset House rink and being surprised that a garden centre would have such an impressive winter entertainment, we decided to stop and investigate on our way back.
Against all expectation I have actually managed to complete the Nike RunLondon 10k! I even managed it in a quite respectable 55 minutes and 12 seconds.
I did the run with Rachel and Ed (who did it last year too and was the inspiration for Rachel and me to join in this time around). Rachel completed it in 1 hour …
As we're now just over 22 weeks in, we got to visit the hospital again for our second scheduled ultrasound. Here's the proof:
Unfortunatley none of the pictures from this scan seemed to be nearly as clear as the last one. The equipment was just the same, although the baby was being very awkward and not moving into any helpful …
Following on from the last post, here is my favourite failing answer (so far)...
Details of how I formatted test.csv
Highlight I1 -> Insert Function -> Proper -> Text A1 -> Highlight Col I -> filldown
Highlight J1 -> Insert Function -> Proper -> Text B1 -> Highlight Col J ->filldown
Copy and Paste Special Col I into I …
This is one of the homework questions that Digitalbrain has recently been giving out to prospective candidates for a Linux system administrator role.
Working with a large, complex application with many thousands of users, we very often have to manipulate significant amounts of textual data. Perhaps as part of a process to create new student accounts within a school, or …
Digitalbrain has been looking for new systems administrators for it's main platform services (Linux based) since the first of the old team resigned in April. During this time we've hired two new people. Ie it seems to take over two months to find each sysadmin!
Digitalbrain is still looking at least one more systems administrator.
Yesterday I met up with two of my good friends from university, John and Claire. They had been down in Brighton for the wedding of John's sister so it seemed an ideal oppurtunity to catch up with. Not to mention it being a great chance to scare Liz with some more of my friends (I've so far escaped meeting too …
I had my first commercial (well, paid and for the entertainment of others) dancing experience yesterday. Once we got started and my nerves subsided (actually quite quickly) it was fantastic fun and a great afternoon.
Thanks to some encouragement from a good friend (Rachel) I started salsa dancing at a club in Redhill (Mondays, 8pm - 10pm in O'Neils) in …
A few friends and family (who I clearly don't talk to often enough) have recently asked me who Liz is. Not that a photo can really introduce someone, but as a start here is a snap of Liz and myself taken in April.
