What a start

My morning commute consists of a fairly short drive from home to Edward's nursery, then onto Liz's work in Reigate and finally back to my home office in Redhill. This is normally a pretty uneventful drive that should take around 15 minutes but typically takes 30 at the moment with traffic and road works.

This morning was in some ways …

Mob madness

I could write lots about the madness of the recent complaint explosion against Russell Brand and Jonathon Ross, but thankfully several other people have done it for me.

I certainly think it would be interesting if Ofcom went with Charlie Brooker's suggestion of a counter-complaint system.

Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex released today

Ubuntu released Intrepid Ibex earlier this afternoon, just as scheduled. It comes with lots of new features. While new versions of all the key software is certainly good, a convenient encrypted directory is handy and the VM builder is very convenient, it's actually a couple of very small additions that I'm enjoying the most.

My phone runs Android

Sort of! It boots most of the time (via HaRET) and produces a desktop with some menus that can be navigated and applications that can be launched. The controls on the front of the phone seem to do useful things and the slide out keyboard works . The touchscreen however is far from right with touches causing random things …

We moved!

And we don't intend to do it again for a very long while!

Two interesting things we've learnt...

  • when a van rental company suggests a van "big enough for a three bed house", get a bigger one if you intend to move from a two bed house.
  • if you visit a new house the afternoon before completion and the builder …

New home, finally

It was over a year ago that we put down the first holding deposit for a new home. At that point is was nothing more than a fenced off muddy bit at the back of the development.

Since then we've watched it grow steadily, if rather slowly...

Another one!

It would appear that the sleepless nights, stress and hard work haven't taught Liz and me anything!

I'm proud (and scared, again) to announce that Liz and I are expecting our second baby around the middle of January. :-)

The first scan was a couple of weeks ago and everything seems to be fine. Although I think the baby's going …

Hello family car

With my RX8 lease ending I had to find myself a new car. I actually found this quite tricky, given our list of requirements...

  • automatic, so that Liz could use it to learn
  • manual look-a-like, so I can pretend I'm not driving an automatic!
  • five doors, for easy access with Edward and to the boot for all of his stuff …

Bye bye sports car

This is old news (it happened at the end of April) but I don't feel I should let it pass without mention.

As I lease my car, April was sadly time for me to return my Mazda RX8...

Mazda RX8

It was quite expensive on petrol and wasn't particularly easy to get Edward in and out of (although it was possible!).

Except …

Posting again

I've not posted anything here for a while. Partly I've been busy, partly I've been lazy and mostly I've been wanting to finish off writing my own blog software before I add any new content.

Unfortunately my blog software isn't finished yet (see the first two problems above) and things (or at least blog ideas) are going to start falling …

Supajam competition launch

One of my customers today launches their latest competition. This contest is looking for unsigned bands to upload their best track and after a few rounds and filtering and a public vote the winner will get to perform live in Spain in front of thousands of people!

Certainly not my idea of fun, but I'm sure many will disagree …

Edward is stepping

After many, many months of pulling himself up on furniture and crabbing his way around it, plus a short lived (twice I think) attempt at standing on his own around new year, Edward has finally decided to consistently balance himself on his own two feet.

He continued to practice that for a day and the following morning decided it was …

cold--

What's worse than a cold?

Now I don't just mean a slight sniffle and a bit of a sore throat. I mean a cold that saps all of your energy, makes you generally ache and regularly wakes you up at night because you can't breath through your nose and breathing through your mouth is just too painful!

So, what's worse? …

Crazy filesystems

Recently I invested in some new hard disks for my file server. The idea being to increase capacity (1.1TB to 1.9TB) and to decrease the power usage (10 disks to 3).

I finally got around to fitting them at the end of last week and set the computer copying all my existing data from old to new over the weekend. …

Mum recovering

I've had a very busy couple of weeks with work and didn't help myself by turning last weekend into a physical (but fun) workout at Camber!

Hence my delay in finding time to write an update here. Anyway...

My Mum was able to come home from hospital towards the end of the week after her crash. While still rather …

Web browsers to scream at

Thankfully I don't have to play with the details of web user interfaces all that often. But occasionally, they are forced upon me. Thankfully I know enough HTML and CSS to be dangerous!

Even with such knowledge I am still frequently amazed at the obscure browser (in this case IE6) bugs that have to be worked around.

Today's IE6 bug …

Get well soon mum

Last Sunday (28th) my mum was in a car accident.

Thankfully her physical injuries, while initially worrying for doctors with potential internal bleeding, now seem to be relatively minor.

However there does seem to have been a toll on her memory. It has been getting gradually better over the last few days and she can now remember most major things, …

Edward seems recovered

This morning Edward took the last dose in his course of antibiotics and he seems to have made a good recovery. Certainly our fear that he would be allergic to antibiotics appears not to be the case. :-)

The strange rash that doctors couldn't identify has also largely cleared up and will hopefully completely vanish in the next few days. …

Not a week to plan

This week really hasn't gone to plan, in any way for any one.

Monday started out innocently enough. I had some out of hours work to get done during the evening, but it wasn't anything major.

When I went to bed at 4am on Tuesday morning, I was of a different opinion. Monday was a disaster! The work was at …

Biphasic sleep week 0

For a first try I don't think it's gone too badly. I have found that trying to nap in the early afternoon is practically impossible with such a small house and so many (2) other people in it.

However moving the nap to lunch time did largely resolve that.

It didn't help to resolve my other main "problem" - the …
